Overview

This course is intended to help all novice Word users get up to speed quickly. We cover the various features of the interface, show users how to create a basic document, and introduce users to the most important Word tools. We'll teach you how to create, save, edit and share a new document. You'll learn how to customise the Microsoft Word interface to suit your way of working. You will be able to edit simple documents, format text, move it around, search and replace, achieve paragraph effects such as bullet points and numbering, insert tables, create headers and footers and set-up for printing. By the end of the course you'll be fully competent in the tasks Word users need every day.

Essential Skills

  • Understanding the interface
  • Customising the Quick Access Toolbar and Status Bar.
  • Opening, closing and saving files.
  • Displaying the Show/Hide characters.
  • Inserting and deleting page breaks.

Editing Files

  • Learn time-saving techniques to quickly select content.
  • Insert and remove manual page breaks.
  • Correct spelling and grammar errors using Editor
  • Use Find and Replace to quickly update information.
  • Insert special characters such as the degree sign, accents and graves, and other symbols which are not found on a standard QWERTY keyboard.
  • Use Cut/Copy and Paste to reorganise content.

Creating Files

  • Create a file from scratch based on a blank document and set appropriate page margins
  • Create a file based on an existing template
  • Using the Save and Save As commands

Formatting Text

  • Adjust paragraph settings such as text alignment, line and paragraph spacing
  • Indent text
  • Apply bullet and number formatting
  • Apply character level formatting to emphasise text with bold and italics
  • Change the font family and size

Tables

  • Insert a table to display complex data
  • Edit the table structure and apply formatting

Headers and Footers

  • Insert simple header and footer information such as a page number

Printing

  • Set the file up for printing
