Overview of Audacity Introduction

This course is aimed at podcasters, teachers, lecturers and Higher Education users who use Audacity to create audio material to a high standard. In addition, Audacity can be used by community groups and individuals to create oral history projects. Topics covered include Overview and basics, Using the multi-track options, Practical exercises and the Finished production.

Overview and Basics

What is Audacity?
How to use Audacity in your audio production
Importing audio from a digital source eg. portable recorder, CD, USB memory stick etc.
Editing the material

Using the Multi-track options

Multi-track recording
Cutting audio from multiple tracks
Locking tracks together to keep them synchronised
Mix multiple selected tracks into a single mono or stereo track
Adding the mixed track to the project while preserving the original tracks
Moving tracks up and down

Practical Exercises

Making editorial judgements - what to include and what can be lost without compromising the overall aim of the production
Working in mono and stereo
Adding sound effects and/or music to create 'pictures in the mind' of your listener
Using noise reduction tools to remove or reduce unwanted background sounds
Adding effects such as EQ, reverb, pitch, echo, delay and compression
Adding voice links

The Finished Production

Mixing down your production to a .wav or .mp3 file acceptable to host platforms
Exporting to your radio station playout system ensuring Loudness Compliance requirements are met
