The course provides a thorough introduction to Word, teaching users to create and edit documents, format documents in the most efficient manner, to improve presentation and layout and to perform file management procedures.


No previous experience of Word is necessary.

Character-based formatting

  • Changing typefaces
  • Choosing size and applying styles e.g. bold, italic etc.
  • Other character formatting e.g. colour
  • Using the Format Painter
  • Selecting text of similar formatting
  • Cut & Paste Smart Tag

Paragraph-based formatting

  • Adding borders and shades
  • Applying horizontal ruling lines
  • Paragraph alignments; using paragraph space before and after

Navigating a document

  • Using keyboard shortcuts

  • Using AutoCorrect to fix common spelling mistakes and for rapid expansion of abbreviations
  • Using the Smart Spell Check; adding words to a customised dictionary

  • Applying simple bullets and numbers
  • Customising bullets and numbers, including multi-level numbering
  • Re-ordering lists; use of picture bullets

Setting document-wide choices
