Objectives

This course will enable those attending to gain a thorough understanding of Web Accessibility and Usability issues. Techniques for achieving accessibility standards will be covered, along with informal recommendations for delegatesí own websites.

Pre-requisites

Experience with using websites generally is useful, but no technical experience is required.

  • Validating Web Content to meet Web/W3C Standards

Web Accessibility

  • Web Accessibility and the Disability Discrimination Act
  • Reasons why websites should comply
  • Advantages of accessible websites
  • The benefits of search engine visibility

Understanding Accessibility Requirements

  • Understanding the disability needs of the user
  • Challenges faced by users: visual, motor, auditory
  • Understanding the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0)
  • COI Guidelines for all Government websites

Making a website more accessible

  • Correct use of fonts and colour
  • Making accessible images, forms, tables and navigation
  • Inserting accessible media (audio, video & Flash)
  • Writing to achieve clarity and usability
  • Working within a Content Management System (CMS)

Assessing Website Accessibility

  • Testing a website for accessibility
  • Analysing and solving accessibility problems
