Objectives

This course is designed for anyone who needs to understand the fundamental features and uses of PageMaker and the best way to use these to create brochures, newsletters, flyers and other page designs.

Pre-requisites

None other than a working knowledge of Windows or the Macintosh, or previous attendance on the Introduction to Windows or Introduction to Macintosh course.

The PageMaker environment
• The principles of DTP and the PostScript language; the desktop, the toolbox, changing views of the page; document setup
• The Measurements palette: resizing and positioning objects; X, Y, W, H attributes; the use of rulers and guides
• Typing in text with the text tool; drawing objects with the graphics tools
• Using the PageMaker templates
Working with Text Blocks
• Placing text files; re-shaping and moving text blocks; using Autoflow and Semi-automatic text flows
• Cutting and pasting within a text block; re-threading text blocks
• Text Frames and Frame Options, including horizontal and vertical alignment and setting a text inset
Working with graphics
• Placing graphics as individual objects and inside frames
• Text and graphic frames
• Resizing, scaling, cropping and setting text wrap around images
Typography/Formatting text
• Character formatting e.g. size and font
• Paragraph formatting e.g. spacing, breaks, indents and leading
• Typographic control including tracking, kerning and baseline shift
