Outplacement Training
Staff leave companies for many reasons and in many different circumstances; sometimes these are unfortunate. Where redundancy is involved, many organisations help to cushion the blow by providing new skills and enhancing existing ones, to boost the chances of employees finding new work outside the company. As well as providing help with interview techniques, CV writing and presentation style, up to date IT skills are a major boost to the chances of finding new jobs.
To cite an example, Transmedia has, since 1994, provided the entire IT element for a major City outplacement company. Specialising in banking and other financial industries, this company helps firms such as Nat West, Lloyds and Abbey ensure that the staff they shed have the best possible chance of finding alternative employment. It looks after people who have often worked their way up over many years, giving them one-to-one coaching in subjects where they felt that skills were long overdue but were unable to admit to lacking. Analysing their comments after a six week period of study, it is obvious that these individuals, particularly older people, have frequently regained their confidence to a considerable degree. In many cases, they feel that they are no longer hampered by a relative lack of technical skills in an IT literate marketplace.
Similarly, a major pharmaceutical company, another long term Transmedia client, needed to lose substantial numbers of staff from its design and packaging departments, following a recent merger. A retraining grant was agreed for 200 employees, who were encouraged to take courses in the IT skills that they believe will stand them in good stead for the future. So far, many of these have taken web authoring and other publishing courses with Transmedia, thereby ensuring that they remain up to date and competitive in the job market.
